Best Virtual Handpan Apps in 2026 (iPhone, iPad and Android)

A real handpan costs a lot, weighs a lot and is hard to find. A virtual handpan app costs little or nothing and fits in your pocket. We tried the handpan apps people search for most and sorted them by what they are best at: playing, learning, meditation, composing or practising with a real drum.

Full disclosure: we make Panora, so it sits at the top of our list. We have tried to be fair to every other app here, and several of them are excellent at things Panora does not try to do. App details are from the App Store, Google Play and the developers' websites as of October 2026.

1. Panora: best overall for playing and composing

Panora is a virtual handpan built to feel like an instrument rather than a game. Every note is a real recording with a warm attack and long sustain, and you can feel each tap with haptics. There are 50 handpan scales, from D Kurd and D minor to more exotic tunings, plus knock and slap percussion.

Where Panora really stands out is what happens after you play. Record a performance, layer new takes with loop overdub, then fix it in a grid sequencer with BPM, time signature, loop points, velocity and one-tap timing correction. Export the result as a WAV file, or lock your phone and let it keep playing for a meditation session.

  • Best for: beginners, meditation, composing and sketching ideas
  • Standout features: 50 scales, loop overdub, grid sequencer, lock screen playback, WAV export, iCloud backup, no sign-up
  • Big screens: optimised for iPad and the foldable iPhone Duo, where the handpan and sequencer sit side by side
  • Price: free to download, optional premium subscription
  • Try it first: the handpan on our home page plays in any browser, free

2. PANet: best for lessons

PANet is the friendliest way to be taught the handpan on a phone. Its own course, a large library of songs in numeric notation, a game mode for timing and accuracy, and a notation editor make it feel like a patient teacher. It is also one of the few handpan apps available on both iOS and Android.

  • Best for: complete beginners who want structure
  • Price: free to download

3. Handpan Sim: a simple, well-liked simulator

Handpan Sim focuses on the basics and does them well: sampled handpan tones, a few play modes and easy recording and sharing. It has some of the best user ratings in the category, which says a lot about how pleasant it is to just tap and play.

  • Best for: casual playing
  • Price: free to download

4. DrumFlow: best for practising with a real drum

DrumFlow is a practice companion for people who already own a handpan or steel tongue drum. Set up a virtual copy of your exact instrument, generate patterns shown like tabs, then play along on the real thing. Patterns sync across devices with iCloud.

  • Best for: owners of a real handpan or tongue drum
  • Price: free to download

5. Simple Handpan: best for playing along to songs

Simple Handpan pairs several handpan sound sets with built-in songs and a falling-note MIDI guide you can slow down, plus gentle rhythm accompaniment and a recording library.

  • Best for: learning melodies by ear and eye
  • Price: free to download

6. Handpan Rhythms: best for writing rhythms

Handpan Rhythms lets you write rhythms in a simple stroke-based notation and hear them played on a virtual handpan, with a clap metronome for practice. Premium is a one-time purchase.

  • Best for: rhythm study
  • Price: free, one-time premium upgrade

7. Digital Pantam: lots of scales and extra percussion

Digital Pantam offers a wide range of scales from around the world, multi-touch chords and extra shakers such as maracas, bells and tabla to play along with.

  • Best for: exploring scales and jamming
  • Price: free, with extra packages

8. Notepan: best for handpan tabs

Notepan is not a phone app yet, but if you search for handpan tabs you will find it. It is desktop software with a library of hundreds of tablatures, transposition to your own instrument and a full tab editor.

  • Best for: learning specific songs from tablature
  • Platforms: Windows and macOS, mobile in development
