E Sabye Handpan Scale: Notes, Chords and Sound

E Sabye is the major scale of the handpan world. An E Sabye 9 has an E3 ding in the centre and eight notes around it: A3, B3, C♯4, D♯4, E4, F♯4, G♯4 and B4. Where most handpan scales are minor and reflective, Sabye is bright, warm and smiling, the scale people reach for when they want to play something joyful. You can play one right here.

E Sabye notes and layout

On a handpan the notes do not run around the circle in order. They zig-zag from left to right, low to high, so that neighbouring notes in the scale sit on opposite sides and your hands can alternate. On the handpan above, the lowest tone field (A3) is at the bottom and the notes climb in a zig-zag up to B4 at the top.

Position Note Role in E major
Ding (centre)E3Root, the home note
1A3Fourth
2B3Fifth, the open bass
3C♯4Sixth
4D♯4Major seventh, the leading note
5E4Octave of the ding
6F♯4Second (ninth)
7G♯4Major third, the major colour
8B4Fifth

Count the note names and you will find all seven of E major: E, F♯, G♯, A, B, C♯ and D♯. Nothing is left out, which is rare on a handpan and is what lets so many familiar tunes fit on it.

What does E Sabye sound like?

Bright, open and warm. The major third (G♯) gives it the happy colour that minor scales like D Kurd do not have, and the major seventh (D♯) sits just below the octave, pulling every phrase back home to E. The result sounds hopeful and friendly rather than mysterious.

The way the notes are spread helps too. The fourth (A) appears only once, low down at A3, far from the G♯ and B at the top, so the half step between them never rubs on neighbouring fields. That is why fast runs on E Sabye still sound clean and sunny, and why it is popular for playing with other people, at festivals and for uplifting background music.

Sabye, major and Lydian

The name SaBye is usually traced to the Thai greeting sabai dee, roughly "feeling good", which suits the sound. Some makers write it as SaBye or Sabye, and some sell the same layout simply as an E major handpan.

You will also see Sabye described as a Lydian scale. Both are right: the notes are E major, but start from A3, the lowest tone field, and the same notes form A Lydian, a major scale with a raised fourth (D♯). Played over the E ding it sounds plainly major; linger on A and B and you get the dreamy, floating Lydian lift often heard in film music.

Chords you can play on E Sabye

Hit the three notes together or one after another as an arpeggio:

Chord Notes Positions
E majorE4, G♯4, B45, 7, 8
A majorA3, C♯4, E41, 3, 5
B majorB3, D♯4, F♯42, 4, 6
C♯ minorC♯4, E4, G♯43, 5, 7
E major 7D♯4, E4, G♯4, B44, 5, 7, 8
A major 7A3, C♯4, E4, G♯41, 3, 5, 7

Those first four chords are the I, IV, V and vi of E major, the building blocks of countless pop songs. E → B → C♯m → A is the famous four-chord progression, and every chord of it sits on every other position (5-7-8, 2-4-6, 3-5-7, 1-3-5), thanks to the zig-zag layout.

Four beginner patterns to try

Use the handpan at the top of this page, or Panora on your phone. Numbers are positions from the table above.

  1. Heartbeat: Ding, Ding, 2, 5. Repeat slowly. The low E, its fifth and its octave make a steady, open pulse.
  2. Sunrise: Ding, 5, 7, 8, 7, 5. An E major arpeggio that rises and falls, the brightest sound on the instrument.
  3. Coming home: 2, 3, 4, 5, then Ding. B, C♯, D♯ and E climb up the major scale, and the D♯ leads straight into the E on both octaves.
  4. Four chords: 5-7-8, then 2-4-6, then 3-5-7, then 1-3-5. That is E, B, C♯m, A. Loop it, add the ding between chords, and hum a melody you know on top.

E Sabye 9 and other versions

The number after the name is how many notes the handpan has, counting the ding. E Sabye 9 is the classic layout described here. Larger versions add notes, such as C♯5 on top or extra bass notes on the bottom shell, depending on the maker. The same Sabye pattern exists in other keys too: D Sabye is a whole tone lower and a little warmer, while E Sabye is the brighter of the two most common keys.

E Sabye vs other popular handpan scales

  • E Sabye is major: bright, warm and joyful, the most cheerful of the four.
  • D Kurd has all seven notes of D minor: emotional and cinematic, the minor counterpart to Sabye's full major scale.
  • B Amara is a minor scale without its sixth: deep, open and floating, made for meditation.
  • Hijaz uses an augmented second for a strongly Middle Eastern sound: beautiful, but more exotic and less flexible for Western melodies.

The best way to choose is to listen. Panora includes 50 handpan scales, so you can play E Sabye, D Kurd, B Amara and many more side by side before you spend money on a steel instrument.

Is E Sabye a good first handpan?

For players who want joy, yes. It is as forgiving as any handpan scale, and having the whole major scale means you can pick out familiar melodies and play along with pop songs. Because it always sounds happy, it has less of the melancholy that makes minor scales so moving. If you want emotion and drama, D Kurd is the better match; if you want to play with a smile, E Sabye is a wonderful choice.
